Spine Table Top

Spine Table, Fall 2022

Spine table, created in my Sculpture for Non-Majors class, explores how to illustrate bodily pain through my own disability to connect to my mom. Working through concepts of how living in chronic pain can impact emotional outlook, but also how it can become functional and a site of inspiration. This was my first time woodworking, and it was very difficult to learn/experiment while making a project. At first, I just wanted to make an art object, but after working with classmates on their more functional objects, like chairs, picture frames, or bookshelves, I decided to blend both to create a useful/functional art object. This encouraged me to think more deeply about what materials I would like to use moving forward, and how concepts of materiality are important to art creation.
